Mourners have gathered in central Gaza for the funeral of Mohammed Wishah, an Al Jazeera journalist killed in an Israeli drone strike. The ceremony began at Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in Deir el-Balah, with dozens of relatives, friends, and colleagues joining the procession to the Bureij refugee camp, where they paid their final respects before burial in line with his wishes.

During the funeral, Wishah's body was placed at the exact spot where he had previously delivered live reports for Al Jazeera Mubasher, often covering Israeli attacks and the plight of Palestinians in the besieged Gaza Strip. At a news conference, Ismail al-Thawabta, director of Gaza's Government Media Office, stated that the killing is part of a deliberate policy by Israeli forces, alleging it aims to silence witnesses and obscure the truth.

Al-Thawabta added that 262 journalists have been killed in Gaza since the war began in October 2023, warning that such targeting seeks to stifle the Palestinian voice and prevent the transmission of crime images to the world. Family members described Wishah's final hours; one son told Al Jazeera Arabic they shared a meal just before he left for a reporting assignment, after which contact was lost until his death was confirmed.

Wishah had reported from the field for years and continued working throughout the war despite escalating risks, as Israeli attacks on media workers intensified. His killing in a drone strike on his car on Wednesday raises serious concerns about reporters' ability to document events under constant threat. In a statement, Al Jazeera Media Network described the killing as a "heinous crime," holding Israeli forces fully responsible and calling it a flagrant violation of international law, part of a broader pattern of systematic attacks.
