️ The United Nations Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Iran issued a statement on March 4 condemning strikes carried out by Israel and the United States against Iran. The Mission emphasized that these attacks and Iran's subsequent retaliatory strikes across the region violate the UN Charter, which "prohibits the use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state".
️ The statement stressed that norms of international law must be applied consistently to all—"they cannot vary depending on which state is carrying out the actions". The Mission also noted that the Iranian population is caught between a potential large-scale military campaign that could last weeks or months and a government with a long history of gross human rights violations, with the people still reeling from the brutal suppression of protests that began on December 28, 2025.
️ The Mission expressed being "deeply shaken" by reports of strikes on a girls' school in Minab. According to official data, over 150 students and teachers were killed there, with most victims being schoolchildren aged 7 to 12. Additionally, the Mission stated outrage at the killing of dozens of Iranian officials in "targeted airstrikes" carried out by the US and Israel, highlighting that even if some of these individuals are responsible for human rights abuses or international crimes, extrajudicial killings are not an acceptable means of achieving justice under international law.
️ The Mission also expressed serious concern regarding Iran's retaliatory strikes against neighboring states, warning that these attacks are leading to the death of civilians and destruction of civilian infrastructure across the region. The UN Independent International Fact-Finding Mission on Iran was established by the UN Human Rights Council on November 24, 2022, with the aim of investigating cases of human rights violations related to protests that began in Iran on September 16, 2022.
