The Ghana Football Association (GFA) announced that Ghana Premier League player Dominic Frimpong of Berekum Chelsea has been killed during an armed robbery on the club's team bus as they returned from an away match. The 20-year-old died following the attack, which occurred between Goaso and Bibiani while the team was heading home after a game against Samartex in Samreboi in southern Ghana.
According to a club statement, the road was blocked, and masked individuals wielding guns and assault rifles opened fire on the bus as the driver attempted to reverse. Players and staff were forced to flee into nearby bushes for cover. The GFA expressed "profound shock and deep sorrow" over the tragedy, stating that Frimpong's death is not only a huge loss to Berekum Chelsea but also to Ghanaian football as a whole.
Dominic Frimpong was described as a promising young talent whose dedication and passion for the game embodied the spirit of the league. The association indicated it would strengthen security arrangements for clubs traveling for domestic competitions in response to the incident. This follows a similar attack in 2023 on Legon Cities' team bus after a match at Samartex, though no injuries were reported then, highlighting ongoing security concerns for footballers in the country.
