In the capital of Uzbekistan, Tashkent, officers from the State Security Service (SGB) and the Customs Committee conducted a joint special operation, resulting in the arrest of an inspector from the Tashkent Region Quarantine and Plant Protection Agency while accepting a bribe of 20 million soms. The court has already imposed a pre-trial detention measure, ordering the suspect to be held in custody.
According to investigative data, the official extorted money from a 31-year-old citizen. In return, the inspector allegedly promised to ensure the unimpeded passage of a large shipment of mineral fertilizers—totaling 187 packages of seven different types—through the “Navoi” border customs post. This incident highlights serious corruption issues within the agricultural and import sectors, raising concerns about systemic vulnerabilities.
The arrest operation was carried out in the Almazar district at the moment the full sum was being handed over. Currently, investigative actions are being conducted within the framework of the initiated criminal case. This case reflects ongoing efforts to combat corruption in Uzbekistan, yet it underscores persistent systemic challenges that continue to undermine governance and economic integrity.
The situation demonstrates how corrupt practices within state agencies inflict significant damage on the economy and erode public trust. It also emphasizes the urgent need to strengthen the rule of law and enhance accountability among public officials to prevent such abuses in the future.
