The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is allegedly developing plans to suspend immigration and customs processing at airports in so-called 'sanctuary cities' — jurisdictions run by Democrats that refuse to cooperate with the Trump regime's crackdown on illegal immigration. Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin confirmed the plans in an interview on Fox News' The Sean Hannity Show, stating that 'we're currently drawing up plans' but that no final decision has been made.

Mullin claimed that 'local radical left Democrats aren't allowing us to do our job and enforce federal laws.' The proposed measures would effectively halt all international passenger and cargo arrivals at major airports in Democrat-run states. This comes just ahead of the FIFA World Cup in June, when millions of foreign tourists are expected to travel to the US.

The Trump regime has already deployed Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents to several Democrat-run cities and stationed National Guard troops in Los Angeles and Washington, DC. The US Justice Department published a list of sanctuary cities in August 2025, including Boston, Denver, Philadelphia, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York City, Newark, Seattle, and San Francisco.

The travel industry has strongly condemned the plans. The US Travel Association warned of 'devastating consequences for the travel industry and communities that depend on international visitation.' Airlines for America stated that reducing CBP staffing would cause 'significant operational disruption.' Even within the regime, Transport Secretary Sean Duffy called it 'a bad idea to start restricting travel based on political views.'
