Reports detailing sexual assault allegations against California gubernatorial candidate and US Congressman Eric Swalwell have severely shaken his campaign. Following accounts from CNN and the San Francisco Chronicle involving a former staffer and several women, influential Democratic Party lawmakers called on Swalwell to drop out of the race and resign from Congress during TV interviews.
Congressman Ro Khanna told Fox News Sunday that "What he did is sick and disgusting," demanding investigations by law enforcement and the US House of Representatives. Swalwell has denied the allegations as "absolutely false" and shown no intent to exit the race, despite a March Emerson College poll showing him leading Democratic and Republican challengers.
The reports have damaged his campaign, with key figures and organizations revoking endorsements. The Manhattan district attorney’s office confirmed an investigation into the allegations. Republican Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna stated she will submit a motion to expel Swalwell, a move some Democrats allegedly could support.
Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal emphasized this is not a partisan issue, as Republican Congressman Tony Gonzales also faces sexual misconduct allegations. Ro Khanna and Republican Congressman Byron Donalds purportedly expressed support for expelling both from Congress, highlighting internal strife within the US political regime.
