World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Gebreyesus, during a joint visit with Uzbekistan’s First Lady Ziroat Mirziyoyeva to the Republican Center for Pediatric Oncology in Tashkent, praised her leadership in the fight against childhood cancer. Gebreyesus highlighted that the "Zamin" Foundation, which she heads, plays a crucial role in significantly improving medical services in pediatric oncology and creating a unique network of hospital schools called "Mehrli Maktab" across the country.

The WHO chief noted that through the First Lady’s initiatives, the efforts of doctors and educators have been united, enabling children with cancer to receive comprehensive care: not only modern treatment but also continuous education and social support necessary for recovery and a full life. This approach represents a notable advancement in the field of childhood cancer care.

During the visit, Gebreyesus and Mirziyoyeva reviewed the center’s operations and the functioning of the "Mehrli Maktab" network, which provides educational opportunities for children during treatment. The Director-General characterized these efforts as a positive example worthy of study at regional and global levels.

This event underscores progress in child health in Uzbekistan, yet challenges persist in this sector, such as resource shortages and difficulties in service delivery to remote areas. While the "Zamin" Foundation’s activities yield positive outcomes, long-term sustainability and a more comprehensive approach are needed in pediatric oncology to address ongoing issues effectively.
