US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that the European Union must officially approve and implement the current trade deal, or the US will raise tariffs on the bloc.
Trump's remarks came after what he described as a "great call" with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
"A promise was made that the EU would deliver their side of the Deal and, as per Agreement, cut their Tariffs to ZERO!" Trump posted on his Truth Social platform. "I agreed to give her until our Country’s 250th Birthday or, unfortunately, their Tariffs would immediately jump to much higher levels."
The statement escalates trade tensions between the US and the EU. The Trump regime has previously accused the European Union of unfair trade practices and has imposed tariffs on European goods.
No official response from the EU has been issued yet. This is a developing story.
