A hantavirus outbreak has struck the MV Hondius cruise ship, leaving three passengers dead and several others suspected of carrying the virus. The vessel has been stranded off the coast of Cape Verde for two days.

Spain announced it will allow the ship to dock in the Canary Islands, although the specific port was not disclosed. The Spanish Health Ministry stated the decision was made "in accordance with international law and humanitarian principles."

Once docked, crew and passengers will be examined, provided medical care, and transferred to their respective countries, the ministry said. The World Health Organization (WHO) noted that Cape Verde lacks the capacity to handle the situation, making the Canary Islands the nearest location with necessary capabilities.

The WHO's representative in Cape Verde confirmed that medical evacuation plans are underway and that the ship can continue its route to the Netherlands after the evacuations.

Spanish authorities emphasized a "moral and legal obligation" to assist, as several Spanish citizens are among those aboard.
