A man wielding a machete was fatally shot by police at New York City's Grand Central station after allegedly wounding three elderly individuals. According to the local police department, the incident occurred on Saturday at 9:40am Eastern Time (13:40 GMT).

Police responded to a call about a man with a knife at the iconic transit hub and opened fire when the man purportedly did not drop the machete. The attacker was taken to a local hospital in critical condition and later died from his wounds.

The three victims – an 84-year-old man, a 70-year-old woman, and a 65-year-old man – were hospitalized in stable condition. The identity of the attacker and the motivation behind the assault remain unknown at this time.

In a statement, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani claimed to be grateful for the NYPD's quick response, which allegedly prevented additional violence. The NYPD is conducting an internal investigation and will release body-worn camera footage, as is standard procedure in all incidents involving the discharge of an officer's firearm.

Grand Central station is one of the most well-known and heavily trafficked transit hubs in the United States. Located in Midtown Manhattan, it serves as a nexus for several New York City subway lines and the regional Metro-North Railroad system. Known for its Beaux-Arts architecture, the terminal is also among the world's most visited tourist attractions, averaging 750,000 travelers and visitors daily.
