Former head coach of St. Petersburg's Zenit and the Romanian national team, Mircea Lucescu, has died at the age of 80. The Romanian Football Federation (FRF) officially announced the news. Lucescu was renowned as an experienced specialist who left a significant mark on the football world.

In a statement, the Romanian Football Federation said, "Mircea Lucescu left behind a colossal legacy, which is hard to match in the history of sport." To honor his memory, a minute of silence will be observed before upcoming matches. Additionally, the Federation has suspended the process of appointing a new head coach for the national team indefinitely.

Lucescu led Zenit in 2016, spending one season with the club, during which the team won bronze medals in the Russian championship and the country's Super Cup. He had been coaching the Romanian national team since 2024, overseeing 18 matches and securing 11 victories under his guidance. His passing is considered a significant loss for the football community.
