Uzbekistan has introduced a new support mechanism for children diagnosed with Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). Under this system, families raising children with this condition will be able to receive essential medical equipment, prosthetic-orthopedic devices, and rehabilitation aids for use in home settings. The framework was established by a decree from the Cabinet of Ministers.
The process for obtaining assistance begins with parents submitting an application to their local district or city medical association. The application must include a medical report confirming the diagnosis and a list of recommended equipment. Regional working groups are required to review each application within ten days, after which the data on needs is forwarded to the national level.
The supply system operates on an annual cycle: by June 1 each year, lists of required items for the upcoming period are compiled, and the Ministry of Health organizes centralized procurement. The equipment is distributed to regions by early July. Upon delivery, specialists from medical associations have ten days to transfer the items to families under a contract, ensuring children have all necessary resources for effective rehabilitation and health maintenance outside hospital settings.
