The Los Angeles Lakers secured a 107-98 victory over the Houston Rockets in the opening game of their NBA first-round playoff series. This significant win came despite the absence of the Lakers’ top scorers, Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves, due to injuries, as well as the Rockets’ star Kevin Durant being scratched from the starting lineup.
For the Lakers, Luke Kennard scored a career playoff-high 27 points. LeBron James contributed 19 points and 13 assists, leading the team’s offensive efforts, while Deandre Ayton added 19 points and 11 rebounds. The team particularly excelled on defense, holding the Rockets to just 37.6% shooting from the field.
On the Rockets’ side, Alperen Sengun scored 19 points, and Jabari Smith Jr. had 16 points and 12 rebounds, but Durant’s absence significantly hampered the team’s offensive capabilities. Durant sustained a bruised right knee after colliding with a teammate during a pre-series practice session.
A key factor in the victory was Kennard’s accurate shooting – he made four three-pointers and nine of his first 12 shot attempts. Additionally, veteran guard Marcus Smart, in his playoff debut for the Lakers, recorded 15 points and eight assists.
During the game, LeBron James’ son, Bronny James, also took the court, logging his first meaningful playoff minutes. Game 2 is scheduled for tomorrow in Los Angeles, offering the Rockets an opportunity to even the series.
