Deputies of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan have adopted in the first reading a draft law aimed at intensifying the fight against organized crime. The document provides for the introduction of a separate article into the Criminal Code for the financial support of criminal groups. For individuals involved in such financing, a ban on the application of parole is proposed.
The draft law also proposes to toughen penalties for patronage of criminal organizations, especially if it is carried out using official powers. Significant changes may affect liability for hooliganism: it is planned to strengthen sanctions for acts committed by a group of persons, repeatedly, or with the use of weapons. Separate liability is provided for hooliganism committed by an organized group or resulting in serious harm to health.
Particular attention in the project is paid to the sports sphere: it is proposed to introduce criminal liability for the illegal organization of competitions in combat sports. Participants in such illegal events are planned to be held administratively liable. According to the developers, these measures are aimed at strengthening public order and early prevention of crime, especially among young people.
Since the draft law has so far been adopted only in the first reading, deputies will continue to work on its finalization before sending it to the Senate. This news is seen as part of broader initiatives to modernize criminal legislation in Uzbekistan and enhance public safety.
