On May 5 at approximately 4:25 PM, a Chevrolet Equinox crashed at high speed into a line of cars stopped at a red light near the Chimgan shopping and entertainment center in Tashkent. Numerous videos of the incident circulated on social media.
The footage shows the black vehicle being thrown into the air upon impact and landing on top of other cars. The force of the rear-end collision caused one car to veer off the road and hit a tree. Other drivers attempted to help the victim exit the vehicle. Rescuers arrived to provide assistance.
A Gazeta correspondent who later arrived at the scene witnessed the Equinox completely wrecked. Car body parts, tires, and interior fragments were scattered in a ditch. Landscaping workers were collecting broken tree branches.
According to the Tashkent City Internal Affairs Department, the accident was caused by the 73-year-old driver of the Equinox losing control due to a sudden health deterioration. He was hospitalized with fractures of the pelvic bone and left shoulder, as well as a closed head injury.
Other drivers involved — S.E. (born 1968), M.A. (born 1971), and S.E. (born 1985) — sustained minor injuries and received first aid.
The traffic police reported that 15 vehicles sustained technical damage. An investigation is underway.
