️ British police arrested three men on Wednesday on suspicion of assisting a foreign intelligence service, with local media reporting that one of those detained is David Taylor, the husband of Labour Party MP Joani Reid. In a statement, police confirmed the country in question is China, and the arrests were made under Section 3 of the National Security Act 2023, legislation introduced to grant authorities greater powers to counter foreign interference.
️ The three men, aged 39, 43, and 68, remain in custody. Joani Reid stated in a press release that she has "never seen anything to make me suspect my husband has broken any law," emphasizing she is not involved in his business activities and that neither she nor her children are part of the investigation. She added that she has never been to China and has not spoken on China-related matters in the House of Commons.
️ Security Minister Dan Jarvis, questioned in parliament, declined to provide further details on the investigation but later issued a statement saying, "We will always challenge any country, including China, that attempts to interfere with or undermine the integrity of our democratic institutions." This incident follows a rare warning from Britain's domestic intelligence agency in November, which alerted lawmakers that China was using headhunters on LinkedIn and other covert operatives to recruit and compromise them.
️ The new arrests pose a fresh challenge for Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who recently traveled to Beijing in an effort to reset ties with China after years of mistrust strained bilateral relations. Starmer became the first UK leader in eight years to visit China, aiming to expand economic links as dependence on Washington becomes increasingly precarious. China's embassy in London said it lodged a protest with the British side and condemned what it called attempts to "fabricate facts and concoct so-called 'espionage cases' to maliciously slander China."
