Uzbek grandmaster Javokhir Sindarov placed 8th in the rapid section of the Super Rapid & Blitz Poland tournament, held in Poland.
After suffering three consecutive defeats the previous day, Sindarov scored 4 out of 6 possible points on the third game day: he defeated Fedoseev, then drew with Fabiano Caruana and Alireza Firouzja.
According to Chess.com, Sindarov displayed “brilliant play” in the game against Fedoseev. Despite an unlucky second day, the Uzbek player did not avoid complex positions and entered the fray with a characteristic 11.Nxe5 move. His courage paid off: in an endgame with a rook and two pawns against two minor pieces, Sindarov secured victory.
Subsequently, Sindarov drew with American Fabiano Caruana and Frenchman Alireza Firouzja. Against Caruana, he sacrificed quality in the style of ninth world champion Tigran Petrosyan, gaining an advantage on the light squares. According to Chess.com, this provided an edge but was insufficient for a decisive blow.
After nine rounds of rapid, Sindarov accumulated 8 points out of 16, joining a group of players trailing the leaders. Maxime Vachier-Lagrave also has the same score. Alireza Firouzja has 6 points, Radosław Wojtaszek has 5. The tournament leader is American Hans Niemann with 13 points. Wesley So is second with 12 points, and Vladimir Fedoseev third with 11 points.
The Super Rapid & Blitz Poland tournament is part of the Grand Chess Tour series and takes place from May 5–10 in Poland. In rapid, each player has 25 minutes per game with a 10-second increment per move. In blitz, the time control is 5 minutes with a 2-second increment. In rapid, a win awards 2 points, a draw 1, and a loss 0. In blitz, points are awarded on the standard system: 1/0.5/0.
Over the next two days, participants will play 18 blitz games, with a win worth 1 point. The first day of blitz begins on May 8. The stage winner is determined by the total points from both disciplines.
The newspaper previously reported on the tournament format and participants.
After Warsaw, the series continues with a classical tournament in Bucharest (Romania), a rapid stage in Zagreb (Croatia), two tournaments in St. Louis (USA), and a final in the USA.
