President Shavkat Mirziyoyev of Uzbekistan met with World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on April 21, during the latter's official visit to the country. The discussions focused on further developing cooperation in modernizing and strengthening the national healthcare system, addressing key challenges in this sector.

Under the cooperation framework, a series of strategic documents aimed at healthcare system development have been prepared. Reforms in this area are being implemented with consideration of WHO's expert advisory support and its international standards and recommendations. Specifically, efforts include training qualified medical personnel, improving primary healthcare, diagnostic and disease prevention systems, and introducing state medical insurance mechanisms.

The meeting concluded with agreements to further develop practical cooperation in priority areas, such as enhancing pharmaceutical regulation systems, implementing digital solutions and artificial intelligence technologies in healthcare, and conducting joint events and research. These agreements aim to deepen Uzbekistan's healthcare reforms amid ongoing global health challenges.

The previous day in Samarkand, Head of the Presidential Administration Saida Mirziyoyeva also met with Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, coinciding with an international forum on "Combating Transnational Drug Threats on the Path to Societal Health and Security." They discussed expanding cooperation between Uzbekistan and WHO, with emphasis on healthcare reforms, digital medicine development, improving pharmaceutical market regulation, and enhancing regional collaboration. Partnership issues with WHO in narcological treatment and rehabilitation were separately addressed, highlighting the multifaceted nature of the cooperation.
