Berlin police have issued an order imposing temporary restrictions around Soviet war memorials in Treptower Park, Tiergarten, and Schönholzer Heide during commemorative events on May 8 and 9, 2026. The restrictions will be in effect from 6:00 a.m. on May 8 to 10:00 p.m. on May 9.

Law enforcement authorities stated that the measures are necessary to ensure public safety and prevent potential conflicts during the commemorations amid the ongoing armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

According to the document, within the designated areas, it is forbidden to wear military uniforms or their elements, military insignia, as well as to display certain symbols and attributes that, as stated in the police order, could be perceived as “glorifying” military actions.

The restrictions cover the “V” and “Z” symbols, St. George ribbons, flags and symbols associated with Russia, coats of arms and flags of the USSR, symbols of Belarus and the Chechen Republic, Russian and Soviet military flags, as well as specific images and other designations mentioned in the police order.

Additionally, the order prohibits the performance and reproduction of certain march and military songs.

Exceptions are provided for diplomatic delegations and other persons with privileged status. For World War II veterans, it is specifically stated that the restrictions on wearing military uniforms, insignia, and St. George ribbons do not apply. Also, individual flags, ribbons, and symbols are permitted as part of funeral wreaths, flower arrangements, and other commemorative items laid at the memorials.
