Russia's Defense Ministry announced a ceasefire in the war against Ukraine for May 8 and 9 to mark Victory Day in World War II. The decision was made by President Vladimir Putin.

The ministry stated: "We expect the Ukrainian side to follow this example." However, it warned that if Ukraine attempts to disrupt the Victory Day celebrations, Russian forces will launch "a massive missile strike on the center of Kyiv."

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in turn, declared a ceasefire starting from midnight on May 6. "We believe that human life is priceless and immeasurably more valuable than any anniversary celebration. Therefore, we declare a ceasefire from midnight on May 5-6," he said.

Zelensky also noted that Kyiv had not received any official requests from Russia regarding the terms of the ceasefire, highlighting the mutual distrust and lack of coordination between the two sides.
