Prince Harry, the younger son of King Charles III, made a surprise visit to the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv on Thursday. The prince arrived on an overnight train from Poland and was filmed getting off the train and greeting people on the platform by Britain's ITV News.
Harry is in Kyiv to take part in the Kyiv Security Forum, a conference where diplomats and military officials discuss challenges facing the country. His trip comes at a time when the world's attention remains on the US conflict with Iran. Harry told ITV News he wanted "to remind people back home and around the world what Ukraine is up against."
The visit coincides with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy joining EU leaders in Cyprus to finalize a €90 billion loan from the EU. EU leaders approved the loan on Wednesday after Hungary lifted its veto, with the formal signing taking place Thursday in Cyprus.
The loan arrives at a critical time for Ukraine, which needs funds to bolster its resources as it fights Russian forces for a fourth year since the full-scale invasion began in 2022. Harry, who served 10 years in the British Army, is set to join a panel featuring Ukrainian war veterans, aligning with his passion for helping injured veterans.
Harry described Ukraine as "a country bravely and successfully defending Europe's eastern flank," adding that "it matters that we don't lose sight of the significance of that." His visit occurs as global attention shifts toward the war in Iran.
