President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev has reviewed the investment project for the development of the Nishbosh coal mine in the city of Angren, Tashkent region, the presidential press service reported.
The mine's total reserves are estimated at 233 million tons of coal, with an annual production capacity of 10 million tons. The project is valued at $494 million and is expected to create 880 new jobs.
Additionally, it was proposed to build a new thermal power plant with a total capacity of 1.4 GW based on this mine. The project plans to attract $1.3 billion in investment and construct four power units, each with a capacity of 350 MW. They are said to operate using advanced technologies.
During the construction of the plant, 1,500 jobs will be created, and after commissioning, 310 permanent jobs. The TPP is expected to generate an average of 9.8 billion kWh of electricity per year (for comparison: in 2025, Uzbekistan produced 84.8 billion kWh). According to calculations, this will save 2 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually.
The presentation also addressed issues of localization and industrial cooperation in the mining industry. The importance of increasing the share of local products in projects involving foreign investment, consolidating the needs of large complexes and industry enterprises, and supporting local producers through long-term contracts was emphasized.
Therefore, the task was set to develop a localization strategy for the mining industry for 2027–2030. The president approved these proposals and gave relevant instructions to responsible officials.
In early February, Mirziyoyev was presented with a project for deep processing of 8–9 million tons of coal and production of over 1.1 million tons of polymer products, valued at $5 billion. Also discussed was the development of the Nishbosh coal mine under a $494 million investment project. Production was planned to start in 2026.
