US President Donald Trump met with Chinese leader Xi Jinping in Beijing on May 14. The talks lasted more than two hours at the Great Hall of the People on Tiananmen Square and were held behind closed doors.

According to Xinhua, Xi told Trump that the most important issue in US-China relations is 'ensuring peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.' He warned that mishandling the Taiwan issue could lead to 'confrontations and even conflicts,' jeopardizing bilateral ties.

The White House described the meeting as 'productive.' The sides discussed expanding US business access to the Chinese market, increasing Chinese investment in US industry, stopping the flow of fentanyl precursors, and boosting Chinese purchases of US agricultural products.

They also agreed on the need to keep the Strait of Hormuz open. Xi stated that China opposes militarization of the strait and charging fees for its use. He expressed interest in buying more US oil to reduce China's dependence on the strait.

During the open part of the talks, Trump called Xi a 'great leader' and his friend. The Chinese leader said cooperation benefits both sides, while confrontation harms both.
